Fires force closure of 300,000 acres to recreation

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise National Forest officials say they have shut down access to a popular recreation area because of wildfires in the region.
State transportation officials also say they have closed a section of Idaho Highway 21 northwest of Stanley because of a fire that ignited Thursday.
The area closed off to recreationists Thursday in an area encompassing parts of the Middle Fork of the Boise River drainage and the small town of Atlanta. Crews are working to control the Trinity Ridge fire, which ignited Friday and has burned nearly 36 square miles of mountain forest.
Officials have shut down access roads and are advising recreationists to camp, fish or hike elsewhere.
Earlier Thursday, officials reopened a section of Highway 55 near Banks because of the Springs Fire.
