Seahawks' Moffitt to have elbow surgery
The Seahawks are off the field after their final practice (it was really more of a walkthru) before Saturday's preseason game against Tennessee.
And of the handful of players who won't be on the field, one, starting right guard John Moffitt, could be out for a bit of the preseason. Moffitt, who left Thursday's practice with a sore elbow, will likely need surgery according to Pete Carroll.
"His elbow is bothering him, he's going to probably have surgery on his elbow here," Carroll said. "He's got a couple of loose bodies or something hanging around in there that's causing him some pain. It wasn't really an injury, it's just kind of a situation over time, and it showed up this week. So we're going to likely get him worked on and fixed as fast as possible. It looks like a two or three week turnaround, so we want to go ahead and get that done immediately."
With that two-to-three week recovery time frame, Carroll said they're not expecting Moffitt to miss any of the regular season. Moffitt, a third-round pick last year, missed the second half of his rookie season after suffering a torn MCL and PCL against Baltimore.
Deuce Lutui will get the start at right guard Saturday, and Rishaw Johnson and J.R. Sweezy will also see time at right guard. Sweezy, a seventh-round pick, was a defensive tackle in college but Seattle picked him planning on moving him to guard. He has proven a quick study so far at his new spot. Johnson signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent after the draft.
A handful of other players will sit out Saturday, Carroll said, including receivers Sidney Rice (shoulders), Ricardo Lockette (leg), Doug Baldwin (hamstring) and Terrell Owens (signedlessthanaweekagoandis38yearsold). Carroll also said that running back Marshawn Lynch would not likely get a bunch of carries, then added under his breath, "In his street clothes" so we can probably safely rule him out as well.
