Gregoire budget director to guide community college system

State budget director Marty Brown will leave next month to take the reins of the state's community and technical college system.

Today, members of the state Board of Community and Technical Colleges chose Brown to be executive director of the agency which serves as the statewide voice for the 34 public college campuses.

Brown, one of the most recognized and respected figures around the Capitol, has been with Gov. Chris Gregoire since she took office. He served as her legislative affairs director until becoming director of the Office of Financial Management in 2010.

“Marty has been a constant in my office since the beginning of my administration,” Gregoire said in a statement issued late Friday.

“Over the last eight years, he's been one of the first advisors I turn to when I need solid advice and has become a dear friend and trusted confidant,” she said. “His sense of humor is second to none and provided needed laughs during some difficult times. His presence in my office will truly be missed by me and my entire staff.”

Brown served as legislative director, budget director and deputy chief of staff for former Gov. Gary Locke. He's also done a tour of duty as Secretary of the Senate.

In a prepared statement, state board chairwoman Sharon Fairchild said Brown is “a visionary leader who is well respected for his ability to steer important policy initiatives in tough financial times. His years of experience will be a tremendous asset for our students and our colleges.”

Brown, 60, will succeed the retiring Charlie Earl. He will earn $189,150.
