Pets left in overheated vehicles will die

EVERETT -- The Snohomish County Animal Control Division warns people not to leave pets unattended in vehicles during the hot weather forecast for this weekend.
The warning follows the death of a dog inside a car last week at an apartment complex near 128th Street SE, south of Everett.
That case is the subject of an ongoing investigation, said county Auditor Carolyn Weikel, who oversees county animal-control services. Investigators are awaiting more information to determine whether heat or some other factor contributed to the dog's death.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says pet owners should never leave animals alone in a parked vehicles. During warm weather, the vehicle's interior can heat up rapidly, putting pets at a high risk of fatal heat stroke.
The National Weather Service forecasts weekend temperatures reaching the high 70s in the Everett area.
