Classic musical opens

The charming 1960s musical "Bye Bye Birdie" opens this weekend at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave.

The musical, presented by the Village Theatre's Kidstage SummerStock production, focuses on an Elvis Presley-like rock star who is drafted into the Army and creates a near-riot in a small Midwestern town when he stops there for one last publicity junket.

Hits include "Put on a Happy Face," and "Kids."

The production involves a large cast of advanced theater students performing with a live professional orchestra.

"Bye Bye Birdie" performs at 7:30 Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 19. Tickets are $16 and $14. Go to www.villagetheatre.org or call 425-257-8600.

Aargh! Meet the Seafair Pirates, watch a blind dingy race and participate in children's activities or walk the trails around the Everett Marina today at The Pacific Northwest Cruiser Party.

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Port of Everett, 1205 Craftsman Way, Everett. Food vendors will be on site.

The event is presented by the Brethren of the Sound and the Port of Everett.

Artists invited: Space remains available for artists who want to participate in Arlington's Art in the Park festival Sept. 8 and 9.

The show is in Legion Park in downtown Arlington, with live music, food vendors and the farmers market, as well as a "Celebration of the Arts" at noon Sept. 8.
