‘TiVo la Resistance!’ balances smarts, stupidity

Reviewers have called this piece of performance art “clown theater for adults.”

But anyone over the age of 8 should get it as well.

“TiVo la Resistance” opens its West Coast premiere today of Logic Limited’s intelligent yet funny show that values storytelling as much as physical comedy.

Performed by Chris Arruda, Sandi Carroll and Brad Fraizer with direction by Jane Nichols and Matt Steiner, the show strives to make audiences laugh with “highly physical, rigorously honest and hopefully the smartest stupidity you’ll ever see.”

“We value storytelling over the cheap gag, and we value our relationship to the audience above all,” wrote performer Sandi Carroll in an email.

Carroll described the show as clown, but not circus clown. There’s no scary hair or big shoes.

This circus is based on the European tradition of character-based performance with a direct and vital connection to the audience that changes the show every night, Carroll said.

“We have an audience member join us on stage during each show, and it’s always thrilling to discover what they come up with,” Carroll said.

Jane Nichols is a master clown teacher who has been the group’s mentor and director. She has been teaching at the University of Washington for six years. The LTD group has been doing a residency at the UW and creating new work, some of which they will bring to Everett.

Nichols is the sister of Hap Wertheimer, who owns Hap’s Garden Design in Everett and who is involved in several local organizations including the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens.

“TiVo la Resistance!” began development in residence at Celebration Barn and continued to be developed by Mud/Bone Collective with performances in New York City at Dixon Place, The Gershwin and The Brick Theater, and had its international premiere at The Lyric Theater in England last summer, Carroll said.

“TiVo la Resistance!” will be presented at 8 tonight and Saturday and again at 10 p.m. Saturday, with some mature content, at Village Theatre Second Stage, 2730 Wetmore Ave., Everett.

Tickets are $15. Call 425-257-8600 or go to villagetheatre.org/boxoffice.php.
