SNOHOMISH -- Drivers who plan to head west on U.S. 2 this weekend should prepare for up to 20-minute delays.

Crews working for the Washington state Department of Transportation are scheduled to close all westbound lanes between Highway 9 and 20th Street SE from 8 tonight to 5 a.m. Monday.

The closure is part of the $22.4 million project to build an overpass for traffic from Bickford Avenue to merge onto westbound U.S. 2.

Four similar closures are planned for later this month and in September.

Drivers are encouraged to use detours, such as Highway 9 and 20th Street SE. The biggest traffic buildup is likely to happen this weekend, near the trestle, spokeswoman Meghan Pembroke said.

"Afternoon traffic is going to be the worst," she said.
