Everett church to host team of cross-country cyclists

Everett United Church of Christ will host 34 bicyclists for dinner and a sleep-over Monday evening, and the public is invited to meet them.
The riders, young adults ages 18 to 25, are near the end of cross-country trip with Bike & Build Inc. The Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization raises money for affordable housing projects.
Everett is the next to last stop on the ride from Providence, R.I., to Seattle. Von Flake, board chairman at Everett United Church of Christ, said the church has welcomed the cycling group for several years.
Flake said the church will serve a potluck dinner for the riders and congregation members at 6 p.m. Monday. The public is welcome at the Everett church, 2624 Rockefeller Ave., for a slide-show presentation following dinner, at about 6:45 p.m. Monday.
Locally, Flake said, Bike & Build will make a donation to Housing Hope, a nonprofit that provides affordable housing in Snohomish County. According to the Bike & Build website, the group has contributed $3,387,200 to housing groups over nine years. Its goal for 2012 is about $600,000.
The cyclists will sleep on the church floor.
"I'll be cooking them breakfast," said Flake, who also oversees Thursday soup-kitchen meals at United Church of Christ. "Then they're on to Seattle, the end of the line."
