Western coach Jackson hired by Washington
Five months later, he's getting out of Bellingham.
The Vikings' longtime coach got a long-overdue promotion to a Division I program on Friday, when he was named to Lorenzo Romar's staff at Washington. CBS Sportsline reported Friday that UW assistant Raphael Chillious is about to take a similar job on Jay Wright's staff at Villanova.
While at Western for 27 seasons, Jackson won a school-record 518 games. Last season, he guided the Vikings to a 31-5 record and the program's first-ever national title.
In a statement released by the UW athletic department, Romar said he has tried to hire Jackson in the past and added that getting him to come to UW is "an absolute steal."
"You hire a basketball coach off of winning a national championship ... it doesn't happen very often," Romar said in the statement. "I'm just ecstatic that he has decided to do this."
