LAKEWOOD -- A suspected drunken driver nearly struck two pedestrians before crashing into a rock wall in the Lakewood area Tuesday.

The wreck happened about 2 p.m. along Highway 531 near McRae Road, said Trooper Keith Leary with the Washington State Patrol.

The driver was an Everett man, 27, who had just returned from a deployment aboard the USS Nimitz, Leary said.

Leary and another trooper spent the last few days of the deployment on board the aircraft carrier, talking to thousands of sailors about safe driving.

Preliminary evidence indicates the man may have been speeding, Leary said. No serious injuries were reported.

"He is lucky to be alive," Leary said.
