Larry Waller of Granite Falls submitted this photo of a “golden trout,” just under 6 pounds, which his son-in-law Derek Johnson (holding fish) and grandson Hunter Johnson caught in June in a small lake west of Boise, Idaho.
The resident fish manager for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game said the trout is a genetically-altered albino rainbow, produced by an Idaho commercial trout-raising firm which, each year, donates excess fish of this strain to the state for planting in ponds and small urban lakes. The recreational fishery for these unusual trout is very popular, the state spokesman said.
