It's time for mutts to strut at Everett's Langus park

Grab your leash, put on your sneakers and head out to Langus Riverfront Park on Saturday for Everett's annual Mutt Strut.
This is one of those free events that can mean fun for every member of the family -- whether they are two- or four-legged.
The Mutt Strut means a mile walk for your doggie and you and the kids and also other activities.
New this year is a booth set up by Imagine Children's Museum where visiting kids can make dog and cat bobble heads out of Popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners.
There will also be free ID microchip implants for your dog or cat for the first 100 Snohomish County residents.
There are also dog competitions, displays and lectures for the humans and free bandanas -- for you or you dog.
Last year, the Mutt Strut was at Silver Lake. This year the event was moved to Langus Riverfront Park and that's good news for strutters, said Everett Parks and Recreation ranger Barry Martin.
"It's a fantastic park, with the mountains there to see and the Snohomish River trail is there," Martin said. "I'm amazed at how many people still haven't been there."
Mutt Strut is held at Langus every even year to not conflict with fishermen who are after pink salmon, which run in the Snohomish River every odd year.
If the fishermen and Mutt Strutters are both vying for parking, things get crazy.
"Traffic and dogs don't mix well," Martin said.
Besides, having the Mutt Strut at Langus Park means it's close to the Everett Animal Shelter which is just across the street from the park.
It's a good opportunity for the shelter to strut its stuff to the public.
"We have such an awesome shelter and so many people in our community haven't seen it," said Dee Cordell, shelter operations coordinator. "So anything to draw people out here to see the shelter the city built and see what a positive, great place the animals have will help the community feel good about the shelter."
Shelter volunteers will walk dogs during the strutt that are available for adoption. And visitors can go into the shelter and view adoptable cats.
The Animal Rescue Foundation, the shelter's veterinary clinic, will offer nail trimming for dogs for $5 as a fundraiser.
For dog owners who like to compete, there will be contests in a variety of categories including the most tricks your dog can do in 45 seconds and the best doggie dancer; dogs have 30 seconds to get their dance on.
Though Mutt Strut draws between 500 and 800 people, there will be plenty of parking and plenty of dogs to behold.
"Every breed is out there," ranger Martin said. "It's all about the dog and sharing the love of your dog and enjoying the day with your dog."

Mutt Strut is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Langus Riverfront Park, 400 Smith Island Road, Everett. Admission is free. If you wish to enter your dog in the races or competitions, the cost is $5 per dog for one event or $15 for unlimited events.
• 9 to 10:50 a.m.: Registration for the Dog Walk and Rover Runs
• 10:15 a.m.: Dog Walk begins
• 10:50 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Registration for Showcase events
• 11 a.m.: Rover Runs begin
