MUKILTEO -- An electrical power surge and fire at a Mukilteo apartment complex temporarily displaced six families on Thursday night.

The surge happened about 10 p.m. at Longwood Village Condos along 76th Street SW, Mukilteo Assistant Fire Chief Brian McMahan said.

An electrical contractor and crews from the Snohomish County Public Utility District had been working at the complex most of the day replacing a transformer, he said.

The power surge, smoke and water damaged six apartments, including appliances and other property inside, McMahan said. Firefighters were on scene until almost 2 a.m. making sure other units were safe.

Crews also responded from Everett and Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The incident remains under investigation by the state Department of Labor and Industries.

A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.
