Landscaping for nature: Homeowners who would like to have more birds, butterflies and pollinating bees visit their yards are invited to attend a free class on "naturescaping," from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 8 at Brier City Hall, 2901 228th St. SW, Brier.
Ryan Williams, habitat restorationist for the Snohomish Conservation District, will speak on the use of native plants, habitat needs of wildlife and streamside planting. Williams has been working on habitat issues around the county for six years and recently spearheaded the Brierwood Park planting project to improve buffers in the park.
Monica Van der Vieren, a Washington native plant steward and educator for Woodland Park Zoo's Backyard Habitat program, will cover attracting local wildlife. Van der Vieren began her training so she could introduce wildlife habitat to an old farmstead in the upper Snohomish River estuary.

Help out at bird fest: Organizers for Puget Sound Bird Fest in Edmonds are looking for people to help with registration, monitoring speakers and with children's activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds.
