Officers were chasing the man at about 5:15 p.m. after he ran from a traffic stop in the 3000 block of 196th Street SW, according to court papers.
The man had a felony warrant for his arrest, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said Monday.
Officer Ryan Hoirup caught up with the man and began making the arrest.
The man fought back, and they both tumbled over an 18-foot embankment, Sessions said. They landed at the bottom, with nothing breaking their fall.
Hoirup was unable to move, and firefighters had to bring in technical rescue equipment to get him out. They took him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Hoirup was in the intensive care unit Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was listed in serious condition but was improving.
He is believed to have suffered a broken hip, among other injuries, court papers said.
Hoirup, 28, is a five-year veteran of the department, Sessions said. He is married and has a new baby.
The other man had a broken wrist. After the fall, the man tried again to run from police but was captured nearby.
The man, 29, of Lynnwood, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on multiple warrants and for investigation of second-degree assault. He has several other criminal cases pending, according to court papers.
The incident in Lynnwood remained under investigation Monday. Lynnwood police were grateful for the help they received from local police and fire departments, Sessions said.
"We thank them all for their service and support," she said.
