LYNNWOOD -- In a back-and-forth defensive match that went the full five sets, Monroe defeated Meadowdale 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23, 15-12 in a Wesco 4A/3A crossover volleyball match on Tuesday night at Meadowdale High School.

The game started off slowly for the Bearcats. After falling in the first set Monroe head coach April Munoz knew that her squad needed to make an adjustment.

"It took us about a set and a half before we really started to click," said Munoz. "After that we were just able to control the ball more."

After the Mavs' controlled the third set, the two teams battled in the game's final two sets with Monroe prevailing 15-12 in the fifth, and final, set.

"The fourth and fifth sets were just point-for-point," added Munoz. "Both teams were battling ... this game was just a defensive battle!"

The Bearcats were led by Chloe Cory's 41 digs and by Melina Seabrook's 16 kills.

On Seabrook's performance Munoz said, "Melina is a leader all-around. She definitely leads by example."

Not to be overshadowed in the close match up was the performance of Meadowdale's Carly Reece, who finished with 24 kills to go along with her 22 digs and two aces.

"Carly is swinging really well," Munoz said of the Mavericks' player. "She's a really good player."
