A few private boaters scored in the 8- to 10-fish-per-rod range, but more had three to four fish per person, Beeghley said. Most boats were running 40 to 45 miles, which is approaching the limit most private-craft fishermen will attempt. Beeghley said the catch rate dropoff isn’t unusual at this point in the season, although last year’s unusual fishery held up through October.
“The charter boat catch was solid,” Beeghley said, “which might indicate more fish farther out.”
On the salmon front, most charters took their one-coho limits out of Westport over the weekend, with fish averaging 7 or 8 pounds.
