No endorsement for governor from ed reform group

SEATTLE -- A prominent Washington education reform group has decided not to endorse a candidate for governor.
The League of Education Voters said Thursday that both Attorney General Rob McKenna and former congressman Jay Inslee have good ideas for improving education in Washington state, but neither has come up a credible plan for paying for those improvements.
The group commends McKenna’s detailed plan, including an emphasis on early learning, but says McKenna depends too much on growth in the state’s economy and a cap on spending for other state expenses.
The league says Inslee’s education plan has improved since the beginning of his campaign, but he also depends too much on the economy. The group also doesn’t like Inslee’s opposition to charter schools.
Two other influential education groups previously announced their endorsements. The state’s largest teachers union, the Washington Education Association, is supporting Inslee. And Stand for Children has picked McKenna.
