JT Barnett waived, claimed, plus weekend notes
The Silvertips got down to the three-overager limit today when winger JT Barnett was placed on waivers and claimed by Kelowna.
Barnett ended up playing fewer than 30 games with the Tips. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was acquired last November from Kamloops in exchange for a third-round bantam pick. Barnett was acquired specifically to fill the offensive void left when Tyler Maxwell demanded a trade and was sent home. However, he appeared in just 20 games, tallying four goals and eight assists, before being sidelined the remainder of the regular season by a knee injury. He returned in time for the playoffs and scored one goal in four games, then went pointless in three preseason games.
Kelowna had just one overager on its roster, so Barnett will have every opportunity to make the Rockets.
The subtraction of Barnett leaves wingers Ryan Harrison and Cody Fowlie and defenseman Landon Oslanski as Everett's three overagers. The move also gets Everett's roster down to 14 forwards, which is pretty much what a team wants. However, that doesn't included Lucas Grayson, who's still listed as a defenseman, but who for all intents and purposes is a forward now. So there may be one more move that needs to be made.
As for this weekend's final two preseason games -- at Seattle on Friday and at home against the T-birds on Saturday -- the Tips will play without returning captain Ryan Murray. Murray is still settling in, and with 10 other defensemen still battling for roster spots, they need to play in order to state their cases.
One player who will play, however, is center Kohl Bauml. Bauml has been out all preseason recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. However, he's been given the green light to return to action.
Also, Harrison has resumed skating in practices. Harrison has been out all preseason because of a case of mononucleosis, but he's participating in practices again, wearing a no-contact jersey. Harrison is suspended for Everett's first four games anyway, and the Tips are hopeful he'll be ready to go when he's eligible again on Oct. 3 at home vs. Tri-City.
