SHORELINE -- Marysville Getchell may not have shocked the world, but they were able to get their first victory in the history of the school's football program, defeating Shorewood 16-7 in a Wesco 3A crossover game played at Shoreline high school on Friday night.
After going up 9-0 early in the first half the Chargers seemed to have momentum going in their favor. A feeling that Marysville Getchell coach Davis Lura felt his team hadn't felt for a while -- if ever.
"It's hard to explain," said Lura on his teams victory. "It's almost like we got a monkey off of our back. There was a lot of hugging, I'm very proud of our kids. This (the victory) is something we've been talking about since last year."
Shorewood managed to fight back in the second half, pulling within two and then driving from its own 20-yard line to the Getchell 10. But Getchell's Kaleb Seymer ran an interception back for a 73-yard touchdown to seal the victory for the Chargers.
"Our defense really stepped it up (tonight)," added Lura. "We had a lot of three-and-outs, which we didn't have much of in our first two games this season."
With the defense coming up with several key stops, the Marysville Getchell offense was led by running back Cullen Zackuse, who rushed for 140 yards on the night.
"We ran the ball really well tonight," said Lura. "Going up 9-0 really gave us some good momentum and we just really fed off that energy."
The Chargers look to carry that momentum into next week as they play Lura's alma mater Stanwood.
