The vast wasteland awaits

What channel is "Cheers" on? TV viewers can watch the premieres of several new shows on TV networks in the coming days. A few of them, expected to last longer than last year's "Charlie's Angels," are listed here.

We'll save you the effort, though: Romantic medical drama? Check and check. Legal drama with plucky heroine? Check. Edgy family comedy? Check, check. Soap opera with musical numbers? Check. '60s-era period drama? Check. "Lost"-like cryptic drama? Check and check.

Or you can wait until next season, because we're pitching a pilot set in the '60s about young mom-and-dad, doctor-and-lawyer team who uncover a plot by mysterious government agents to turn all of America into a Broadway musical. Still have to work the Mafia angle in somewhere.

October surprise: Apple said they've been overwhelmed with advance orders for the iPhone 5; some customers may not get their phones until October.

Those who have to wait to brag about their new phones can ask Siri to announce to anyone within earshot when their iPhone 5 is scheduled to arrive.

Don't know much about history: On this day in 1759, the French formally surrendered Quebec to the British.

The British in turn surrendered it to the French Canadians for a dozen French crullers from Tim Horton's.
