Theft trial for papal butler starts next week

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI's ex-butler and another Vatican employee will go on trial Sept. 29 in the theft of documents from the pontiff's private quarters.
The date was announced Monday by Vatican City judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre.
Paolo Gabriele, who as butler was one of Benedict's closest aides, is accused of aggravated theft. Claudio Sciarpelletti, who works in the powerful Holy See office of secretariat of state, will be tried on a charge of aiding and abetting the crime.
Gabriele, who is under house arrest in Vatican City, has reportedly said his actions were inspired by the Holy Spirit and aimed at doing good by shedding light on Vatican operations.
The documents allegedly revealed infighting and corruption at the Vatican.
