"Gretzky denied!" Members of the Everett Silvertips WHL hockey team toured the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier at Naval Station Everett on Tuesday.

A game of street hockey on the flight deck was interrupted only twice to shouts of "Plane!" but then quickly resumed with calls of "Game on!"

Run silent, run deep: The U.S. Navy has dismissed a commander of a Connecticut-based nuclear sub because he faked his own death to end an affair with a mistress. Investigators learned that the officer had sent his mistress an email in which he posed as a co-worker and told her that he had died.

The sub commander went even further, firing off a torpedo tube stuffed with clothes, oil and debris to convince her he was dead.

Don't know much about history: On this day in 1982, the smiley emoticon -- a colon, a hyphen and a parenthesis, :-) -- was developed by a Carnegie Mellon University professor for use in computer messages.

The professor was later sued by colleagues who had developed permanent neck injuries from turning their heads sideways to read his emails.
