Natural homegrown pumpkins eventually rot away into a mushy mess.
Glass pumpkins, if you're careful, will last forever.
The Schack Art Center is inviting you and your family to come pick a forever glass pumpkin during Schack-toberfest, an art and harvest-themed festival at Schack Art Center in downtown Everett.
You don't even have to get your shoes muddy.
The festival runs from 10 to 5 p.m. Sept. 28; 10 to 5 p.m. Sept. 29; and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 30 at Schack, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett.
The weekend features a glass pumpkin patch, glassblowing demonstrations and "Make It Now" glass pumpkin classes in the hot shop.
For Saturday and Sunday, planned events include pumpkin carving demonstrations, artist painting demonstrations and kids' activities of decorating fall cookies, painting vegetables and more.
There will be four raffles. With a $2 ticket, you could win a one-year friend membership to the Schack Art Center; one of two hand-carved pumpkins; one large glass pumpkin made in the hot shop Saturday; or one of two huge pumpkins to take home and carve yourself.
Admission to Schack-toberfest is free. Signing up for a Make Your Pumpkin class comes with a cost.
The Make It Now pumpkin class allows you to make your own pumpkin in 20 minutes or less in the Schack hot shop. All ages are welcome.
You work with a skilled team of glassblowers, who are able to design and help you blow your own glass pumpkin, complete with a swirly stem.
All supplies are provided. Reservations are recommended. Your pumpkin will be ready for pick up 24 hours later.
Class No. 1 runs from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday for teens 13 and older and adults 18 and older. The fee is $45.
Class No. 2 is from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday for teens 13 and older and adults 18 and older. The fee is $45.
Classes No. 3 and 4 are for kids 10 and older. The fee is $45. Call for reservations.
To add to Schack-toberfest festivities, there's Beer and Brat Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday for guests 21 and older. Get your tickets early; this event sold out last year.
The evening includes live music, glass blowing demonstrations, beer and hard cider from local breweries, bratwurst with all the fixings, popcorn and more. Visitors get a free souvenir Schack Pint glass with ticket.
Tickets are $20 for Schack members, $25 for nonmembers and $30 at the door.
