Coho aplenty at Everett fishing derby

Longtime friends and fishing buddies Carl Rienstra and Jim Brauch check out the hundreds of Everett Coho Derby participants Sunday morning. Rienstra is the current chairman of derby and Brauch was one of the three founding fathers of the event 18 years ago, marking this year as the 19th annual competition.

A record 88 coho were caught during the kids' competition, with cash prizes for the top three fish. Noble Hargitt of Tulalip, took home first place with aa 11.95-pound coho. As always, kids entered the event for free and all received a donated toy prize.
In the adult competition, derby volunteers weighed-in more than 900 coho from an estimated 2,000 participants.
Organizers were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers involved in this year's derby.
After all the fish were weighed, Everett's Harvey Aney took home the top $3,000 cash prize for his 17.08-pound coho.
Even though Aney boasted the biggest fish, most fisherman were lucky to take home a beautiful coho or two.
