SHORELINE — Shorewood dealt Mountlake Terrace its first volleyball loss of the season, beating the Hawks 3-2 to open up Wesco 3A South play on Tuesday night.
The match included several closely contested sets, multiple shifts in momentum, and a surge in the tiebreaker led by the Thunderbirds freshman libero Joely Shepard.
“We were just adjusting to each other really well,” said Shorewood head coach Jen Chartrand. “Finally my girls just really kicked it up in the fifth set and decided they really wanted to beat Terrace.”
The Hawks came into the game having gone 6-0 in nonleague play to start the season.
Mountlake Terrace took the first set 25-22, then dropped the second by almost the same margin. Shorewood took the third and nearly had it sewn up, leading the fourth set by 19-13 and 23-21 at different points, when the momentum shifted again. The Hawks called a timeout and came back hot.
“We couldn’t close, we couldn’t finish it,” said Chartrand. “They had a couple of really big blocks.”
In the final set, Shepard went on a seven-point serving streak. “The girls were so excited that just pushed them through. They hit a run of points and kind of took off and wanted to finish.” Shepard finished with 6 aces and 18 digs.
Chartrand attributed the victory to young players “working really well to bond as a team and push through tough spots in the match together.”
