Prep girls soccer: Snohomish 2, Edmonds-Woodway 1
Brooke Pingrey found Green open inside the Warriors' penalty area and senior finished from eight yards just two minutes from time, which prevented any chance of a Edmonds-Woodway rally.
"We knew we had to come with our best game," said Panthers head coach April VanAssche. "We had to tighten everything up and we wanted to set the tempo early, which is difficult on their field."
The Panthers gave VanAssche the early momentum she wanted. In the sixth minute, Green fed Taylor Morrell a pass about 25 yards from the Warriors net. Morrell hit the ball first time and the shot eluded Edmonds-Woodway goalkeeper Kiera Towell for the game's opening goal.
"We expected them to be good," said Warriors head coach Bill LeCompte. "I think that their 4-4-2 formation, in which the fullbacks pushed up, gave us a little trouble in the first half."
Thanks to the formation and a strong defensive effort, Snohomish held the lead for the majority of the match. VanAssche credited defender Emily Minogue for marking Warriors forward Madison Schultz.
But with 20 minutes to go, the Warriors increased the pressure and Schultz finally broke loose in the 68th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Midfielder Alyse Pattison played a through ball that released Schultz behind the Snohomish defense and the freshman finished from just outside the 18-yard box.
After the tying goal, both teams had opportunities as the game went back-and-forth in the final 15 minutes, but it was Green who converted her chance to consign the Warriors to their first loss of the season.
"It was definitely one of the best games we have played this season, as far as a whole unit," VanAssche said. "This was a team win."
