VANCOUVER, B.C. -- The Everett Silvertips are on the board.
Everett earned its first victory of the 2012-13 Western Hockey League season Friday night when the Tips defeated the Vancouver Giants 5-3 at Pacific Coliseum.
Reid Petryk scored his first two goals of the season and Austin Lotz played a strong game in net for Everett, which won at Pacific Coliseum for the first time in more than three years. The last time the Tips won at Vancouver was a 4-3 victory on Sept. 19, 2009.
Mirco Mueller scored his first career WHL goal for Everett (1-2-0-1), and Manraj Hayer and Joshua Winquist also scored for the Tips. Lotz finished with 34 saves as Everett won despite being outshot 37-21.
John Neibrandt, Trevor Cheek and Tristan Sieben scored for Vancouver, which remained winless at 0-3-0-0. Liam Liston allowed four goals on 13 shots in the Giants goal before being pulled early in the third period. Tyler Fuhr stopped seven of eight in relief.
Everett grabbed an early lead. Just 2 minutes, 8 seconds into the game Mueller's shot from the left wall beat Liston to give the Tips a 1-0 lead.
Vancouver, took control of the period after that, outshooting Everett 12-4 in the period. The Giants tied the game at 12:21. Vancouver broke three-on-two, and the trailer, Neibrandt, put a shot in off the post to make it 1-1.
The Tips then surged ahead with two goals 22 seconds apart early in the second period. Petryk restored Everett's lead at 1:54, putting a shot past Liston after Ryan Murray intercepted a pass in the neutral zone. Then, shortly after, Hayer made it 3-1, converting in front off a Winquist feed.
The Giants cut Everett's lead back to one on the power play at 12:54, Cheek putting a shot through traffic and past Lotz to make it 3-2.
Everett made it 4-2 early in the third period, Petryk scoring his second on a breakaway at 1:54. The Giants made it a one-goal game again at 8:06 on Sieben's redirect in front. But Winquist iced the contest at 13:08, scoring on a nice move down low following a Vancouver turnover.
The Silvertips return to action Wednesday at home against Tri-City. The faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Comcast Arena.
