For the second straight week, the Jackson Timberwolves go into a game that could ultimately decide the 4A Wesco South tonight when they face Kamiak.
Both teams come into the game with identical records of 1-0 in league and 3-1 overall. The Knights cruised to a 35-14 victory last Friday night over Lynnwood in the league opener, while Jackson pulled off a fourth quarter comeback to defeat the defending 4A Wesco South champions 36-34 in overtime.
Timberwolves coach Joel Vincent said he expects the game to be a battle.
“We’re expecting a tough game,” he said. “They look to be well-coached and fundamentally sound.”
The Timberwolves have gotten a lot of attention so far this season with their high powered offense that doesn’t mind slinging the ball down the field. Jackson’s only loss came in week 3, dropping a 45-35 shootout with Glacier Peak. In that game, Jackson quarterback Conor Plaisance threw the ball 50 times, completing 32 of them for over 300 yards.
“We are going to have to pass protect real well because of the nature of what we do and how much we throw the ball,” Vincent said.
If the Knights are to win, they will have to find a way to slow down the Timberwolves passing attack, which is easier said than done. The Timberwolves have a pair of players that are both threats to find the end zone on any given play either on the ground or through the air in Larry Baker Bruce III and Trey Robinson. Baker Bruce III was the Herald’s Player of the Week for his performance in the Timberwolves victory over Jackson, rushing for 137 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. He also scored the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime.
Kamiak did much of its damage last week on the ground led by Austin Hall, who rushed for 194 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns.
“We’ve got to always be aware of where Austin Hall is on the field at all times because they line him up in a lot of different positions,” Vincent said.
It may be early in the season, but there is no question this game has playoff implications.
“You want to control your own destiny and stay perfect in the conference, so in that respect it’s a big game for both of us.”
