Lake Stevens does Octoberfest early

Lake Stevens is getting a jump on the Octoberfest crowd by having its celebration this weekend.

The fun and games began Friday and continue today and Sunday all around the downtown.

Indoor games for kids take place today and Sunday in the Community Center; pumpkin carving contests will be held at the City Gazebo both days; and the Great Race for kids starts on Main Street at noon Saturday (ages 7 to 12), 1 p.m. (ages 13 to 15) and 2:15 p.m. (ages 6 and under).

An event called Run the C-Trail is also today at the 20th Street trailhead to the Centennial Trail. The 10K run starts at 9 a.m., the 5K at 9:30 a.m. and a 1 mile Kids’ Fun Run at 10:30 a.m.

Carnival shows are going on at the downtown boat lunch today and Sunday; and no Octoberfest would be complete without a beer and wine garden and a Root Bier Garden, open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at North Cove Park above the food court.

Arts and craft vendors will be on hand in the library parking lot.

Entertainment includes Enzian Schuhplatter with Bavarian and Tyrolean dancing and costumes noon to 6 p.m. today at North Cove Park and downtown; and Expertease, a pop-rock band from 7 to 11 p.m. in the beer and wine garden.

The event is sponsored by the Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce with proceeds going toward college scholarships and the Leader in Me program.
