USS Nimitz at sea for certifying exercises
The carrier left its home port of Naval Station Everett on Saturday for what the Navy calls a composite training unit exercise with other elements of Carrier Strike Group 11. The strike group includes another Everett-based vessel, the guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup.
After that, the Nimitz will participate in a joint task force exercise, "which is the strike group's final exam prior to being certified for overseas deployment," the Navy said in a news release.
The first training event, the Navy said, "involves exercises that simulate surface and sub-surface threats, mines, small boat attacks and transiting straits in hostile waters."
The Navy did not disclose how long the ships will be at sea.
