After six weeks in port, the USS Nimitz departed Everett over the weekend to participate in exercises that will lead to certification for deployment overseas, the Navy says.
The carrier left its home port of Naval Station Everett on Saturday for what the Navy calls a composite training unit exercise with other elements of Carrier Strike Group 11. The strike group includes another Everett-based vessel, the guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup.
After that, the Nimitz will participate in a joint task force exercise, “which is the strike group’s final exam prior to being certified for overseas deployment,” the Navy said in a news release.
The first training event, the Navy said, “involves exercises that simulate surface and sub-surface threats, mines, small boat attacks and transiting straits in hostile waters.”
The Navy did not disclose how long the ships will be at sea.
