The husband, 69, and the wife, 70, were robbed about 1:30 p.m. outside the Safeway at 75th Street SE and Evergreen Way, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
They were leaving the store with their groceries when the suspect grabbed a wallet from the woman’s hand and ran, Snell said.
The man chased after the suspect for about a block and a half but then suffered a medical problem and collapsed, Snell said. The man then needed immediate medical attention and was taken to a local hospital.
His injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening.
At one point, a passerby joined the chase and struggled with the suspect as he climbed a fence but was unable to detain the man, Snell said.
Officers called out detectives and used a police dog to search the area, Snell said. They also were collecting evidence, including a shirt believed to have been lost by the robber while he tried to get away.
They don’t believe the suspect had a weapon.
The suspect was described as white, about 5-foot-9 and in his late teens.
