MONROE — After three 4A Wesco North volleyball matches, the Monroe Bearcats find themselves standing alone in first place.
The Bearcats defeated Lake Stevens 3-1 by set scores of 25-11, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-18 on Thursday to take over sole possession of first place and also handing the Vikings just their second loss of the season.
Monroe wasted little time taking control of the match, cruising to a 14-point win in the first set.
“I think we just surprised them at the beginning,” Munoz said.
When the season began, the league’s coaches had selected Snohomish as the preseason favorite to win the division, but it isn’t the Panthers or even the upstart Vikings who are alone in first place. It’s the Bearcats.
“They are both strong challenging teams,” Munoz said of Snohomish and Lake Stevens. “Tonight, I even saw improvement through the match on their (the Vikings) side.”
Melina Seabrook helped Monroe stay unbeaten in league play finishing with 11 kills and 13 digs.
“Melina plays with a ton of heart,” Munoz said. “Whatever she does she puts 100 percent into.”
