FEDERAL WAY -- Marysville Pilchuck swimmer Hannah Taylor set three school records and recorded two state-qualifying times in individual events at the Mulkiteo Invitational held Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center.
The senior broke her own records she set as a sophomore in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle. Taylor swam 57.30 seconds in the 100 butterfly to win the event, finished second in the 100 backstroke and helped the Tomahawks 200 medley relay team post a 3A state-qualifying time. Her 50 leg in the 200 freestyle relay also set a MP record.
"It was the first time this season (Taylor) had swam the butterfly," Marysville Pilchuck coach Jaci LeGore-Hodgins said. "She's also been on college recruiting visits the last three weeks, so this is also the first time that she had been able to swim a meet on Thursday, Friday or Saturday."
Taylor's teammate Melody Coleman also won an event, the 100 breaststroke, by two tenths of a second over Cassadie Moore of Sunnyside.
"That time was (Coleman's) personal best in that event and she has dropped two seconds over the past week," said LeGore-Hodgins.
Cascade won two events, finished second in two and third in another to place third overall behind Richland and Bainbridge.
Senior Kalena Laurent won the 100 freestyle with a 4A state-qualifying time of 53.70 seconds. Her sister Demetra also had a state-qualifying time in the 500 freestyle and finished third.
Cascade coach Eric Smith was particularly pleased with the Bruins freestyle relay team of Danielle Booth, Nichole Carlson, Darcie Booth and Kalena Laurent. The quartet won the 400 relay and finished second in the 200 relay. Both results set state-qualifying marks and, despite placing second, their time in the 200 also bettered the old meet record.
"It was our fastest time in the 200 this year," said Smith. "We also hadn't been able to put together a good dual meet time in the 400, but we really stepped up today."
Monroe's Lavinya Yap and Cathryn Armstrong placed fourth and fifth in the 100 backstroke, each with a state-qualfying time. The Snohomish 400 freestyle relay team of Ella Brooks, Hannah Pieper, Alyssa Hyland and Shelby Garrison finished third and also qualfied for state with a time of 3:47.14.
