KENT -- Penalties have been a major issue for the Everett Silvertips already this season, and Saturday night they came back to bite them.
Everett allowed four power-play goals as the Tips fell 5-2 to the Seattle Thunderbirds.
The Tips have been short-handed 36 times in six games this season, while getting just 23 power plays of their own. The power-play discrepancy was 8-3 in favor of Seattle on Saturday, and even though the Tips scored two power-play goals of their own, it wasn't enough.
Shea Theodore scored two of those power-play goals for Seattle (3-3-0-0), which snapped a 2-2 tie with three third-period scores. Connor Honey and Alexander Delnov scored the other power-play markers for the T-birds, while Luke Lockhart scored the even-strength goal. Brandon Glover earned the win in goal with 26 saves.
Tyler Sandhu and Landon Oslanski scored for Everett (1-4-0-1). Austin Lotz stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced in goal, but did not start the third period because of an apparent injury. Cole Holowenko allowed three goals on nine shots in the third to suffer the loss.
Things were all even heading into the third, with Lotz holding the fort for the Tips as they spent much of the game short-handed. However, Seattle scored on two of its first three shots of the third period to take control of the game. Delnov's shot through traffic got past Holowenko on the power play at 4 minutes, 8 seconds of the period. Then just 29 seconds later Lockhart scored on a shot from the slot.
Seattle put the game away at 15:25 when Theodore's shot from the point deflected past Holowenko on the power play.
Everett opened the scoring on the power play at 7:09 of the first period. Glover saved Manraj Hayer's one-timer, but Sandhu put home the rebound to make it 1-0 with his first career WHL goal.
The Tips spent most of the rest of the period on the penalty kill as Everett was whistled for four consecutive penalties. That included a lengthy five-on-three, and the T-birds were also awarded a penalty shot. Lotz made several big saves, turning aside 17 shots in the period as the Tips escaped the period with a 1-0 lead.
Everett continued taking penalties, and the T-birds finally took advantage at 2:44 of the second as Theodore found an opening up the middle and scored on a shot from between the circles.
The Tips regained the lead at 7:20 with another power-play goal, Oslanski's shot from the point going in off the post. Then the T-birds tied it again with yet another power-play marker, Honey scoring on a one-timer after a nice feed from Jesse Forsberg.
