Silvertips trade Chynoweth to Tri-City for draft pick
The Tips, accommodating a trade request, shipped the 17-year-old center to Tri-City on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2014 bantam draft. The pick starts as a fifth rounder but can increase to as high as a third rounder, depending on how Chynoweth performs during the 2013-14 season.
Chynoweth, a native of Cranbrook, B.C., and the son of Kootenay general manager Jeff Chynoweth, was Everett's top pick in the 2010 bantam draft, being selected with the second pick of the second round. He was the only 16-year-old forward to last all of last season with the Tips, notching two goals and six assists in 66 games.
This season playing primarily on the fourth line he was pointless in four contests. Tips general manager Garry Davidson said Chynoweth approached him last week and requested a trade due to questions about his role on the team.
"I think he was concerned about what his role would be with the organization this year," Davidson said. "He perceived he was playing behind some younger guys and he wasn't comfortable with it, but that doesn't mean we're going to change how we see our group. I guess we couldn't come up with an answer where he felt good about staying. If someone is unhappy and doesn't want to be here, for whatever reason, we have to try and accommodate and make things happen.
"I hope it works out for Ryan moving over to Tri-City."
Chynoweth was a healthy scratch in both of Everett's games over the weekend. Davidson said that was the result of the trade request.
Davidson said trading Chynoweth was not in his plans.
"Our intentions were not to trade him," Davidson said. "He's a young guy who played here as a 16-year-old.
"But I agreed on his role, that it wasn't going to change from last year," Davidson added. "I don't think he felt comfortable with another year in Everett playing in the same role."
The trade leaves the Tips with 25 players on their roster: 14 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders.
