Overager shuffle: Fowlie out, Cox in

I should have seen something coming. I decided to spend the afternoon taking in the Tutankhamun exhibit, so of course I come home to find breaking Silvertips news. It never fails ...

So anyway, the Tips were the active team at the WHL overager cutdown deadline today, claiming defenseman Connor Cox off waivers and releasing winger Cody Fowlie.

Cox was just released by Saskatoon after the Blades acquired winger Adam Kambeitz from Red Deer to serve as their third overager. The 5-foot-10, 185 pounder from Lethbridge, Alberta, is in his fifth season in the WHL, splitting the previous four between Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. Last season he had three goals and 38 assists in 65 games with the Blades, and this season he had three assists in seven games.

Fowlie spent two-plus seasons with the Tips. The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Airdrie, Alberta, had 14 goals and 26 assists playing a full 72 games last season, and he had two assists in seven games with the Tips this season.

There's still no word from the Tips on the moves, and I have yet to hear back from general manager Garry Davidson, so we don't know the thinking behind the move yet.

This is tough for Fowlie as it's unlikely he'll be able to catch on anywhere else in the WHL as all the teams are pretty much set with their overagers now. He also had the reputation of being a good guy in the locker room, so that element will be missed.

In Cox the Tips add a veteran puck-moving defenseman. Adding that element to the mix certainly makes sense for the Tips as it's an area that can still use improvement.

However, the Tips are now very old and overcrowded on defense. Everett has nine defensemen on the roster, including two overagers in Cox and Landon Oslanski. It'll be interesting seeing how that situation plays itself out.
