A lot on the line for Mariner, Kamiak

Tonight’s Mariner-Kamiak football game is a rivalry game, a game that players from the two Mukilteo School District teams look forward to all summer.

It’s also a key Wesco 4A South game that could prove pivotal when it comes playoff time.

But Mariner coach John Ondriezek doesn’t feel he’ll have to tell his players anything special to keep his players calm before kickoff.

“The kids are competitors; they know what it’s all about,” Ondriezek said. “It’s a football game. They’re going to go and compete against another team. We won’t say anything special.”

Mariner is coming off a tough loss to Jackson but the Marauders are having a solid season behind the running of dynamic duo Kiante Ahmad-Woods and Josh Williamson. The two have combined to rush for 1,191 yards and 14 touchdowns and Williamson leads Wesco 4A in rushing with 891 yards.

Kamiak has its own star running back in Austin Hall, who is second in Wesco 4A in rushing with 872 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“He’s a tough kid to bring down,” Ondriezek said of Hall, who carried the ball 66 times in the Knights’ past two games. “He seems to get stronger as the game goes along.”

Kamiak is desperate going into tonight’s showdown. Sitting in a tie with Cascade for fourth place in 4A South, the Knights need a win to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot (the top three teams from Wesco 4A North and South make districts),

For Mariner a loss would likely put an end to the Marauders’ hopes for a league title.

Arlington at Monroe

Where: Monroe H.S.

When: 7 p.m.

Records: Arlington (2-1 4A North, 3-3 overall); Monroe (2-0, 3-3)

Breakdown: Monroe lost starting quarterback Mitchell Price in its game against Snohomish last Friday but junior Hunter Bingham stepped in and led the Bearcats on two scoring drives in a come-from-behind victory that kept them unbeaten in Wesco 4A North. Arlington, meanwhile, is coming off of a loss to Lake Stevens and the Eagles need a win tonight if they want to stay in the running for a league title. A Monroe win would all but lock up the 4A North title for the Bearcats, who have Mount Vernon in their league finale.

Key players: Arlington—Skylor Elgarico, Sr., RB/WR/DB; John Decker, Sr., RB; Austin Wells, Jr., QB; A.J. Passalacqua, Sr., QB. Monroe—Hunter Bingham, Jr., QB; Gabe Moore, Jr., RB/LB; Dylan Judson, Sr., TE/LB; Max Blais, Jr., RB/LB; Tanner Lippincott, Sr., OL/DL.

Cascade vs. Jackson

Where: Everett Memorial Stadium

When: 5 p.m.

Records: Cascade (1-2 4A South, 3-3 overall); Jackson (3-0, 5-1)

Breakdown: Cascade has come a long way from last season, picking up its first league win in over two seasons with last week’s 19-7 win over Lynnwood. The Bruins face a much stiffer test against a Jackson team that is in the driver’s seat for the 4A South crown. The Timberwolves have beaten the three other main threats in the division and will have to keep from overlooking the sneaky Bruins.

Key players: Cascade—Ryan Lukas, Sr., QB/DB; KJ Brady, Jr., WR/DB; Kaleb Dobson, Jr., WR/DB; Steven Gallardo, Sr., TE/DL; KeJuan Coleman, So., RB/LB. Jackson—Conor Plaisance, Sr., QB; Larry Baker-Bruce, Sr., RB/WR/DB; Keynan Foster, So., WR/DB; Trey Robinson, Jr., WR/DB; Alek Baumgartner, Jr., WR/DB.

Records: Eastlake (1-2 Kingco-Crest, 2-4 overall); Meadowdale (3-0 3A South, 6-0)

Breakdown: A year ago Eastlake was a 4A playoff team — Lake Stevens knocked the Wolves out of the quarterfinals — but this year they’re having a bit of a down season after graduating much of its talent. Meadowdale had a scare last week, beating Mountlake Terrace with a last-second field goal, but the Mavericks remained undefeated and in a tie with Glacier Peak for first place in 3A South.

Key players: Meadowdale—Michael Cummings, Sr., RB/LB; Brian Marty, Sr., QB; Giavani Shepard, Sr., RB/DB; Morgan Masanda, Sr., RB/DB; Jeremy Gomez, Sr., DL. Eastlake—Drew Lewis, Jr., RB/S; Blue Thomas, So., QB; Gage Casal, Jr., WR; Nick Peterson, Jr., DE/OL.
