Help behind the scenes at United Way: United Way of Snohomish County is looking for volunteers to serve on committees that help set the direction of the community nonprofit.

Volunteers are needed on the board of directors; on committees that oversee audits, marketing, public policy and planned giving; and on special "vision councils" focused on children, family and community programs.

For more information and to apply, visit www.uwsc.org/committees.php. Potential volunteers are encouraged to attend an open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Way's offices, 3120 McDougall Ave., Suite 200, Everett.

Camano fire district budget talks: The Camano Island fire district plans several public meetings regarding next year's budget.

The district expects to make about $1 million in cuts due to decreased revenues, Assistant Chief Levon Yengoyan said. The district also is working to rebuild its volunteer force.

The meetings are held at 7 p.m. at the Madrona Fire Station, 273 N. West Camano Drive.

The draft budget will be posted before the public hearing planned for Oct. 29. The final meeting is scheduled for Nov. 13.
