Sounder train and semi collide in Edmonds

A collision between a Sounder train and a semi disrupted the morning commute in Edmonds on Tuesday.

EDMONDS — A crash involving a Sounder train and a semi-tractor truck snarled the morning commute at the Edmonds ferry terminal Tuesday morning.
The mishap occurred shortly before 7 a.m. when a Sounder North train sheared off the front of the semi after the truck crossed onto the train tracks at Main Street and Railroad Avenue, officials said.
No injuries were reported.
Investigators determined that the truck pulled across the railroad tracks at Main Street “in error,” Edmonds police Sgt. Mike Blackburn said.
As the driver of the truck began backing off the tracks, the southbound Sounder Train was approaching for its scheduled stop at the Edmonds Railroad Station.
“The driver of the truck did not clear the tracks before the inbound train could come to a complete stop,” Blackburn said. “The engine of the train collided with the front of the truck, just forward of the steering axle.”
Burlington Northern Railroad reopened the tracks for scheduled rail transportation around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday. Edmonds police reopened the surrounding roadways about a half hour later.
Ferry departures on the Edmonds-Kingston route were delayed Tuesday morning.
The truck driver is from New Jersey and became confused on directions, Sounder spokeswoman Kimberly Reason said.
“All signals were working properly,” Reason said.
Arrangements were made for Community Transit buses to transport three loads of commuters who otherwise use the train, Reason said.
Edmonds police were continuing to investigate the collision Tuesday afternoon, Blackburn said.
