When American Airlines offered a buyout package, so many employees eagerly jumped ship that now the bankrupt carrier must hire 1,500 new flight attendants.

Training will begin in January 2013, at which time new hires will be issued a standard piece of equipment for American Airlines crews: 3/8ths-inch socket sets for reattaching seats that break loose and threaten to career across the cabin.
