Battling to stay on the cutting edge amid the transition to tablets from traditional PCs, Microsoft on Thursday officially rolled out Windows 8, the latest version of its flagship software product.

The launch was a subdued affair, especially when compared with the 1995 rollout of Windows 95, which starred the Rolling Stones in full strutting-peacock mode. This time, given Microsoft's struggles, a more appropriate musical guest might have been a country star who specializes in weepy ballads.



Don't forget the feathers: The two-year prison sentence handed this week to a disgraced Wall Street tycoon who engaged in insider trading during the 2008 meltdown was denounced by legal experts as too soft. A more appropriate sentence would have been 10 years, they say.

Judge Buzz concurs, and further orders the tar be heated to a temperature of not more than 130 degrees.



Poll fever: Politicians find value in national polls for shaping their views on specific issues, but for the general public, the polls probably are not a whole lot more reliable than a horoscope, writes columnist James McCusker.

Maybe so, but that's not going to stop the most fervent supporters of Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama from freaking out over the next blip in the Gallup tracking poll.
