The Seahawks played without Doug Baldwin in Detroit after the receiver suffered a high ankle sprain in Seattle’s last game, as well as Braylon Edwards, who was an unexpected scratch before the game because of a swollen knee. The situation could be even worse this week when the Seahawks play Minnesota.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said “It’s going to be a long-shot” when asked if Baldwin would return this week, though he did note that Baldwin was able to do some running late last week.
Edwards, who tore his meniscus last season an injury that eventually required two surgeries, had his knee swell up on him Sunday morning and was unable to play. Carroll is hopeful that Edwards will make it back later in the week, but admitted he isn’t sure how the situation will play out.
“We’ll know more later,” Carroll said. “… He did not get injured. For whatever reason it just popped up. I don’t know what it was, and he doesn’t either. He just woke up in the morning and his knee was stiff and he had some swelling that he didn’t have the day before. There was no way to anticipate it. The initial look at is that he doesn’t have any damage to his knee. He has a knee that worn on, so it responded for whatever reason to this trip and we’ll see what that means. He’ll probably not work early in the week just to give him a couple of days to quiet it down, then we’ll see how it is. We anticipate that he’ll be OK, but we thought that last week, so it’s a little bit iffy on that right now.
Ben Obomanu is also a question mark after suffering a wrist injury Sunday. He and fullback Michael Robinson, who also suffered a wrist injury, were scheduled to see a specialist Monday, and Carroll didn’t know the status of either.
The news was better on Golden Tate, who suffered an ankle injury—“He was fine,” Carroll said—but with Baldwin, Edwards and Obomanu all dealing with injuries, Seattle could find itself in need of help at receiver this week.
“We have to consider our situation, yeah, because there’s a little uncertainty there,” Carroll said. “… We’re looking at our options there.” One option is former Husky Jermaine Kearse, who is currently on Seattle’s practice squad.
On Seattle’s other injuries, Carroll said it was “wait and see” for defensive tackle Jason Jones, who missed Sunday’s game with an ankle injury, and that guard John Moffitt should be ready to return to action after missing five games with a knee injury.
“He did get through practice last week, but we just felt like he needed another week,” Carroll said of Moffitt. “We expect that he’ll be ready to rock and roll this week, but he’s got to make it through Wednesday to show the work. We’ll take care of him because we need him to get ready this weekend.”
Asked about cornerback Walter Thurmond, who has returned to practice, but has not yet been activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list, Carroll said they were “Still talking about our possibilities.”
