Hear poets read from their works at EvCC

Poetic styles and themes no longer linger in the areas involving love.

Today’s themes are as topical as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and women’s sexuality.

Those themes will be explored Nov. 5 when Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken and Everett Community College instructor Bethany Reid read from their new books.

The reading takes place at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 at EvCC’s Jackson Center Wilderness Room, 2000 Tower St., Everett.

The event is sponsored by the Possession Sound Writers Series, the Humanities Washington Poet Laureate Program and EvCC. It is free and open to all.

“These are two poets intimate with the history and geography of Washington,” said EvCC English instructor Kevin Craft, coordinator of the Possession Sound Writers series, in a statement.

“Flenniken’s book in particular deals with the history of the Hanford nuclear site. It promises to be a reading in which poetry as a witness to the larger forces and events which shape our lives takes center stage.”

Flenniken is the state’s 2012-14 poet laureate. She will read selections from “Plume,” her second collection of poems published in spring 2012.

Flenniken’s work has been widely recognized. Her first book, “Famous,” published in 2006, won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in poetry, was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association and was a finalist for the Washington state book award.

Reid, who teaches American literature and creative writing at EvCC, will read from “Sparrow,” winner of the 2012 Gell poetry prize.

Reid earned the 2011 Lois Cranston Memorial Prize for her poem, “The Apple Orchard,” which compares an orchard to a whorehouse.
