Marine Corps Maj. Gen. James Kessler, commander of Marine Corps Installations Command, plans to deliver the keynote address at the University of Washington’s NROTC Midshipmen Navy and Marine Corps Birthday Ball on Friday. A graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, Kessler was commissioned a second lieutenant from the University of Washington in June 1980. Kessler also serves as commanding general of the Marine Corps National Capital Regional Command. Kessler was promoted to his current rank in August 2010. He holds advanced degrees in military studies from Marine Corps University, a master of science in systems mManagement from the University of Southern California and a master of science in natural resource strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
Army Pvt. Jacob K. Stapleton has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Stapleton is the son of Bruce and Betty Stapleton of Monroe. He is a 2008 graduate of Monroe High School.
Marine Corps Pfc. Mark A. Orr, son of Ruth Farmer of Auburndale, Fla., and Robert Orr, of Granite Falls, earned the title of U.S. Marine after graduating from boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
Navy Seaman Recruit Krista M. Balint, daughter of Anne and Joe Balint of Monroe, has completed basic training at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Balint is a 2012 graduate of Monroe High School.
Navy Seaman Recruit Michelle C. Manuel, sister of Jamie Manuel of Bothell, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Manuel is a 2012 graduate of Cedarcrest High School in Duvall.
Army Pvt. Ruth E. Baez has graduated from basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. Baez is the daughter of Milicent Hanna of Clinton. She is a 2011 graduate of South Whidbey High School.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Meghan Malloy, a Camano Island native, plans to serve in the National Capital Region during the presidential inauguration Jan. 21. She belongs to a task force charged with coordinating all military ceremonial support for the inaugural period.
“I’m excited to be here supporting the inauguration,” said Malloy in a press release. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is something that very few people have a chance to participate in.”
