EVERETT -- Even without star goalkeeper Rachel Leopold available, Cascade leading goal scorer Denae Weigelt filled in and did as Leopold had done 10 times this season, earned the shut out in a 1-0 victory over Kamiak in a District 1 4A tournament semifinal and winner-to-state game.
Up until Tuesday's game Leopold had played every minute in goal for Cascade, but Weigelt, who had played defender her first three years, seemed a fitting substitute.
"Rachel went home with the flu today," said Bruins head coach Jamie Gay. "With our number one goalie out, Denae, who is our leading scorer filled in as needed. Denae is the type of kid that definitely excels at whatever she does."
Despite the game being a defensive battle, the Bruins Claire Nelson scored the game's lone goal in the 30th minute.
"(Claire) picked up the ball midfield," said Gay. "She dribbled by all of their centerbacks and cut passed the last one and hit a left-footed shot into the right-back corner of the goal."
With the victory Cascade advances to face Snohomish for the district championship. Kamiak plays Edmonds-Woodway on Thursday in the third-place game for a right to play a Kingco team for a spot at state.
At Everett Memorial Stadium
Goals--Claire Nelson (C). Assists--none. Goalkeepers--Kamiak: Emma Makela. Cascade: Denae Weigelt. Records--Kamiak league, 10-4-2 overall. Cascade 12-1-3.
