LAKE STEVENS -- A Lake Stevens student and a bus driver were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon after a bus collided with a pickup at Highway 9 and 20th Street SE, police and school officials said.

The Cavelero Mid High School student, 14, and the bus driver both complained of sore necks and dizziness, Lake Stevens School District spokeswoman Arlene Hulten said.

Three dozen students were on the bus when the accident occurred. Most were transferred to another bus, but six were released to their parents.

The bus was traveling through the intersection at a low rate of speed when the collision occurred, Hulten said. The roads were wet at the time.

Police were investigating the collision Wednesday afternoon.

The Washington State Patrol was called to examine the bus, a standard procedure after a bus is involved in an accident, Hulten said.

Traffic was backed up on Highway 9 for miles in both directions.
