Winterhawks beat Silvertips 5-2
Wednesday night the Everett Silvertips were the victims.
Portland scored four goals in a 10-minute span of the second period, and the short-handed Tips fell 5-2 to the Winterhawks.
Everett, which played two skaters short because of a combination if injuries, illness and suspension, took a 1-0 lead into the second period. However, Portland blitzed the Tips in the second to take control of the game.
Chase De Leo, Brendan Leipsic, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Seth Jones and Ty Rattie scored the goals for Portland (10-3-1-0), which won its sixth straight. Jones, the former Everett first-round bantam draft pick who forced the Tips to trade him during the offseason, had a goal and an assist and finished a team-best plus-three.
Brendan Burke earned the win in goal for the Winterhawks with 22 saves.
Ty Mappin scored his first career WHL goal and Kohl Bauml also scored for Everett (6-9-0-2), which played without five players, including it top two scoring forwards in Joshua Winquist (illness) and Manraj Hayer (unspecified injury). Austin Lotz made 40 saves in net for the Tips.
Everett took a 1-0 lead into the second period courtesy of Bauml's rebound goal midway through the first. But Portland struck early and often in the second to turn the game.
It began at 3 minutes, 38 seconds when De Leo picked out the top corner with a shot from the high slot to tie it at 1-1. Then Leipsic gave the Winterhawks the lead at 9:37, finishing off after a nice piece of skill from Nic Petan. Bjorkstrand scored just 49 seconds later to make it 3-1, finishing off at the back door on a feed from De Leo. Then Jones completed the rally at 13:12, scoring with a shot off the rush.
Everett got one back at 14:30, Mappin finishing off after a hit by Stathis Soumelidis freed the puck. The Tips then had chances to get back into the game early in the third period, but were unable to finish off their chances, and Rattie wrapped it up for Portland with 9:40 remaining when he converted Derrick Pouliot's backdoor feed.
