2A Volleyball Districts: Lakewood stays alive

BELLINGHAM — The Lakewood volleyball team kept its season alive by beating Archbishop Murphy 25-23, 30-28, 20-25, 29-27 in an elimination match at the District 1/2 2A tournament. It was the Cougars’ first win over the Wildcats this year and ended a long winless drought by Lakewood in district play.

“It’s the first time in over a decade that (Lakewood) has won a match (in the postseason) and made the second day of districts,” said Cougars head coach Tasha Kryger.

Skylar Cannon had 19 kills and 16 digs and Kendall O’Kinsella added 14 kills, 18 digs and six aces to lead Lakewood.

The Cougars drew the unenviable task of playing undefeated Anacortes in the opening round. The Seahawks swept aside Lakewood, while Sehome beat Archbishop Murphy in three sets to set up the third match this season between the two Cascade Conference schools.

Lakewood now faces Lynden in another loser-out match on Friday at Squalicum High School. If the Cougars win, they would play the winner of Lake Washington-Sehome in a winner-to-state match that same day.

Cedarcrest, the No. 1 seed from the Cascade Conference, lost to Lynden in the first contest and to Lake Washington in the second to end the Red Wolves’ season.
